More Nica Stories

Pigs and buses don’t mix

Often times in Nicaragua, I will ask what seems to me a very straightforward question, and will be given a quizzical look, as if I must be a bit dull not to know the answer to that one. So when the bus showed up with a pig on top of it, my first thought was to ask
“why is there a pig on top of the bus?” or “how did they get the pig on top of the bus?”
But since everyone getting on the bus didn’t seemed to be fazed, I decided not to make a fool of myself and question what was OBVIOUSLY a common occurrence.

So I was sitting next to Lesbia on the bus, and she was by the window. Not, long bus rides on bumpy roads often make me have to pee. And obviously the pig felt the same way, because he (or she) peed on top of the bus, and this stream of urine flowed down the side of the bus, right on top of Lesbia. Now, if you never have had the opportunity to smell pig urine, let me tell you: Not a pretty smell. No future in exotic perfume here. Now it wasn’t completely obvious to everyone that Lesbia had been peed on by the pig, but pretty soon, she began to stink up the whole bus and everyones looking around and passing little whispers, until finally the bus driver yells “Did the pig pee on you?” And poor Lesbia, by this time full redfaced, had to admit to shame of being peed on by a pig. But then the kindly or perhaps just odor sensitive bus drive had stopped along the river, and gave Lssbia time to wash off the pig pee as best she could…and we continued on our journey. Just another day in nica life. Glad I wasn’t sitting by the window, because then I would be universally known as the gringa the pig peed on.
